7 Do's and Don'ts of Kitchen waste composting 

The Do's and Don'ts of Kitchen waste composting. It is important to know what to do and what not to do in kitchen composting. Simple mistakes in composting will make the composting process stinky with worms and insects. Although it might seem like a huge deal, it isn't. If you find the right method their is no going back. Many people start enthusiastically but stop it once something goes wrong. 
These are the simple Do's and Don'ts of Kitchen waste Composting.

DO's 
1. Segregate Waste properly:
Segregate kitchen waste into Dry waste and Wet waste. 
Wet Waste:
  • Vegetable peel 
  • Fruit peel
  • Egg shell
  • Uncooked Meat
  • Cooked and uncooked food
  • Flower waste
  • Organically decompose waste
Dry Waste :
  • Bottle Cans
  • Clothing
  • Plastic
  • Wood
  • Glass
  • Metals
  • Paper
  • E-Waste
If you are a beginner in composting, do not take cooked or uncooked food just take all the others in the list. Wet waste is also called green waste.

2. Collect Browns: 
Collect enough browns for composting.
  • Browns are dried leaves
  • coconut husk
  • straw
  • wood chips
Browns are the carbon rich compost material, Green are the nitrogen rich compost material. Browns are very important for composting kitchen waste. If you do not have enough browns add soil to the kitchen waste as brown portion.  Dry leaves takes along time to compost, add diluted soar curd  to make the process faster. 


3. Choose the right container:
Choose a plastic or terracotta container which has hole. Composting can be done any container with whole in the bottom. Excess water should be collected. If the container does not have hole and water stagnates lot of moisture will lead develop worms and it might start stinking. 

4. Waste should cut into small pieces:  Waste like watermelon peel should be cut into very small pieces to make the compost process very fast. Big pieces take a very long time to compost.

Don'ts
1. Too much Water: 
Do not pour lot of water in the compost bin to add moisture. Usually the kitchen waste that we add itself will have water which is more than enough. Excess water can stagnate inside the bin and develop worms. 

2. Worms:
Although the white worms that grows in a compost bin is good for composting. It helps in making the composting process faster. But the big white worms looks gross, so if you do not like it then make sure the moisture is maintained in the compost bin properly. Add lot of browns to the bin which will take away the moisture and balance the process. The worms will die and look like shell which can also be added in the compost bin

3.Do not Keep it under direct Sun:
Composting bin should be kept under shade. It should not be kept under direct sun.
